How to Nurture Your Healthcare Members’ Careers

The healthcare industry is booming, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. Employment in healthcare occupations is projected to grow 16 percent from 2020 to 2030, much faster than the average for all occupations, adding about 2.6 million new jobs. Baby Boomers are retiring at a rapid rate and, in contrast, Pew Research Center reports that Millennials – in their prime childbearing years – make up the largest portion of the U.S. labor force, about 35 percent. With large segments of the population entering their senior years and another with growing families, health professionals will be in demand to meet these increasing needs.

So, what can your association do to bridge the gaps and deliver more of the career-advancing benefits your healthcare members seek? 

Invest in your training and certification program 

Take time to review your training and certification programs and be sure to include these types of career advancement opportunities in your meetings and conferences. At the same time, remember that while you might have moved your annual conference to a virtual conference in 2020, it’s still important to engage members in a variety of year-round learning opportunities to address members’ budgets, schedules, educational and certification needs, and learning preferences. Here are some ideas:  

  • Add new offerings – such as personalized healthcare learning paths, just-in-time learning, virtual events, live webinars, and webcasts – to stay relevant with your members and keep them engaged. 
  • Leverage technology that makes it easier to break down content; offer a variety of learning modes and formats; and deliver content through an organized, customized, on-demand course library. 
  • Track and award education credits for in-person and online learning. Use this data to recommend other relevant courses to members. 
  • Take training beyond technical skills to include “soft” skills, such as communication and presentation skills, which can help members excel in the healthcare workplace. 
  • Ask members about their professional goals and challenges, and use their feedback to inform the educational opportunities you provide. 

Give your online career center more attention 

Providing educational suggestions, healthcare occupation outlooks, salary benchmarks, unemployment data, “day in the life” videos, and more can become an extremely valuable part of your association’s engagement strategy. Here are some examples of career content and resources you can add to your online career center to give your healthcare members the support and know-how they’re seeking: 

  • Career path mapping – Give your members a clear roadmap to reach their healthcare career goals.
